My diary 2008
Vancouver Here I Come
Preparations for Vancouver completed with a (joint) win at Gloucester Triathlon. This follows a good month of training including a 7th position at Tewkesbury in a strong field of competitors. This has put me in a good position for the South West Series competition after the first two rounds.
All said and done this has been a good end to a frustrating preparation period including poor weather, the broken arm saga, high work stress, and relatively poor early season pace.
Let the proper racing begin!

Big Thank-you to Knowledgewise and RapidBI
This month it’s a big thank you to my sponsors Knowledgewise and RapidBI for continuing to support me for the 2008 racing season and paying the BTA entry fees for Vancouver. This is a massive help and allows me to commit to some decent warm-up triathlons and cyclo sportive races. My sponsors will also be pleased to hear that my broken arm is now mended (mostly) and so I’m back out on the road and in the pool grinding away at those winter miles which are so important for the summer’s racing!
With pluses there is always a minus and that is that unfortunately I have decided to back out of the European Champs in Lisbon. My coach and I feel that it is more important, given the lost training time, to get my focus for the year sorted and perhaps give something longer a bash in the autumn. Watch this space!!!!

Selection confirmed for European Championships in Lisbon
Some good news after the crash, though it seems a long way ahead. After applying earlier this month, I now have confirmation that I will make up part of the age-group team in May. This event will be a great warm-up for Vancouver the following month.

Disaster strikes during training ride
Early Sunday morning and, as usual, I was out training with MC Montpelier when we ran into difficulty. A simple descent near Sapperton should have been routine when I spotted the lead riders begin to slide out on a shallow curve in the road. Moments later they were on the deck and my rear wheel completely out of control. The impact came next and it was hard and painful. Out of the 10 or so riders, most were on the floor. It was a mess, burnt lycra and bikes everywhere. I thought that my wrist was just sprained but a quick trip to A&E confirmed my worst fears - a broken radial head and I'm out of action for at least 4 weeks.

2008 begins with win at Tewkesbury Aquathlon
Race Report
Despite the recent rain and flooding in parts of Tewkesbury the first Aquathlon, organised by gogglepedaltrainer events, took place today (January 20th). This is first of a series of 4 events that are perfect for competitors who are new to multisport events, or for the seasoned triathlete looking to add some speed work into their preseason training.
A much welcomed break in the rain and unseasonably mild conditions saw 40 competitors successfully completed the 400 metre swim and 4km run. The run was shortened at the last moment in order to prevent the swim/run event becoming a swim/swim event, due to the amount of rainfall in the area this week!
The male and overall winner was Paul Horsfall in a time of 19:18. Paul recorded the fastest swim and run of the day (5:06 and 14:12). Second overall and first female was Caroline Jones (tricoachinguk.org) who pushed Paul all the way to record a finishing time of 19:50 (5:12 and 14:38).
